How Do Veneers Work?

• We begin by numbing your mouth and delicately scraping roughly half a millimeter of enamel from the front of every tooth that will receive a veneer. This is to ensure you have enough space in your mouth to fit the veneers.
• We then take a digital scan of your teeth so that a laboratory can custom-create veneers for your mouth. It’s important to be precise so that the veneers fit over your teeth without disrupting the motion of your bite.
• At a subsequent appointment, we attach the veneers to your teeth with a special cement and make sure they’re ideally positioned. We use a light to harden the cement mixture so the veneers remain fixed on your teeth.
• That’s it – you’re ready to go show off your new and improved smile.

Dental Veneer Recovery Period

You may experience mild discomfort and tooth sensitivity in the first couple of weeks as your mouth adjusts to your new veneers. To avoid this, use toothpaste for sensitive teeth and avoid consuming overly hot or cold foods and beverages.

Veneers are very durable. On average, porcelain veneers last 10 to 15 years before requiring replacement. However, you can extend this timeline for much longer if you take great care of your teeth. This includes not chewing on hard objects that can crack your veneers (fingernails, pens, etc.) and not drinking too much wine, cola, or coffee since these may gradually stain your veneers. 

You must also continue to brush and floss your teeth regularly to avoid dental problems. While veneers cover the front of your teeth, they do not protect your teeth from bacteria, plaque, or cavities.
