How Does Professional Teeth Whitening Work?

1. We start with a thorough cleaning to remove any lingering plaque and food particles so they do not obstruct the whitening process. We also check for any outstanding dental issues like gum disease or tooth decay which the bleaching process can aggravate. If you have any issues, they should be resolved before doing this cosmetic treatment.
2. Next, we’ll provide a lip retractor to wear so that your lips don’t touch your teeth. 
3. We will rub a protective gel along your gums to protect them from the bleaching agents. 
4. Then we will apply the whitening agent to the teeth directly. This triggers the oxidation process to help strip staining off your teeth. 
5. Finally, we shine a blue light onto the teeth to enhance the effects of the oxidation. 
6. This process is repeated a few times in the hour-long session to maximize the whiteness of your teeth.

What Kind of Results Can You Expect from Teeth Whitening?

Your results will be relative to your starting point – this is not like putting dental veneers on your teeth and it’s suddenly completely different. Your teeth should appear between five and 10 shades whiter than before your treatment. If your teeth have significant staining, you may need more than one whitening session to achieve the level of whiteness you want. Yes, you can come back and repeat the process – it is safe to undergo teeth whitening every few months.

After whitening, your teeth may become stained again. Typical results last approximately one year, but you can elect another session to maintain your desired level.
