What Is Guided Biofilm Therapy?

Airflow biofilm therapy equipment - Harmony Family Dentistry in Vancouver WA

Guided Biofilm Therapy is an innovative teeth-cleaning technology we use at Harmony Family Dentistry. A unique and ergonomic solution for caries, perio prevention, and dental maintenance, GBT offers a higher standard of oral care with less scraping and NO abrasive polishing pates.

Here’s how our Guided Biofilm Therapy works:

  • We start by making biofilm visible. We’ll paint a disclosing solution that colors the biofilm (plaque) on your teeth, revealing where in your mouth biofilm accumulates.
  • Using our state-of-the-art AIRFLOW MAX® polishing technology, we gently remove all biofilm and stains from your teeth and tissues and kill the bacteria that make up the biofilm colonies.
  • If needed, we’ll use PERIOFLOW® to remove biofilm from gum pockets.
  • Next, we use an instrument called a PIEZON®, which deploys pulsating water to eliminate hard calculus (tartar) from your teeth. This gentle instrument even warms the water it uses for maximum patient comfort.
  • We’ll do a final check to ensure your teeth feel nice, smooth, and clean.
  • We’ll also do a full oral health assessment on your mouth, and provide personalized recommendations for removing and preventing biofilm in the future.

What Is Biofilm and Why Should You Remove It?

Dental biofilm is what we call the soft sticky plaque on the surfaces of your mouth. Essentially, it’s many different types of bacteria living together, forming a larger colony. You can’t always see or feel biofilm on your teeth, but you can be sure it’s there, and the longer it’s sitting there, the more bacteria it grows.

As biofilm matures, it can start to damage your teeth, gums, and even the surrounding bone. It makes you more susceptible to cavities and gum disease. Studies show it can even be harmful to your overall body health, as biofilm bacteria can travel through your bloodstream. Bacteria found in biofilm have been linked to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Our Guided Biofilm Therapy ensures we removes up to 100% of biofilm. Not only that – it’s comfortable and pain-free, with no drilling or trauma. If you haven’t experienced this unique therapy yet, we highly recommend it – you won’t go back to conventional teeth cleaning!

Your Teeth Cleaning Appointment Includes a Thorough Dental Health Assessment

At Harmony Family Dentistry, our teeth cleaning service includes a comprehensive dental health assessment by Dr. Julie Jang, DDS. We go beyond just cleaning; we want to ensure your entire oral health is evaluated. We’ll check for:

  • Early Warning Signs: We meticulously examine your teeth and gums for early indicators of problems such as cavities, gum disease, and enamel erosion, allowing us to address issues before they escalate.
  • Symptoms That May Go Unnoticed: Even if you’re not experiencing any discomfort, we look for subtle signs of potential issues, ensuring your oral health is maintained at its best.
  • Oral Cancers: Our assessment includes an examination for any signs of oral cancer, providing peace of mind and early detection, which is crucial for successful treatment.
  • Overall Oral Health: We evaluate your bite, jaw alignment, and other aspects of oral health to identify any abnormalities or potential concerns, ensuring comprehensive care.
